Describe your wedding:
Understated elegance & Southern hospitality. We chose our venues for their timeless beauty, and we wanted to let that shine through. We also wanted our loved ones to feel like they were being welcomed into a home for a party, so we added personalized touches like family photos on a fireplace mantle and brass pineapple candlesticks in the centerpieces (since the pineapple is a symbol of hospitality and of sailors returning home… a nod to my father.)
Natural and timeless colors like navy, white and green, and pops of antique gold.
How we met:
We met during law school. I remember the exact spot. Right at the corner where the two bars meet at Bruno’s. She was wearing the most beautiful yellow and white dress.
How I proposed:
I wanted to make sure she was very happy with her ring so I brought her to the jeweler to design it herself. While this meant she got exactly what she wanted it took a lot of the surprise out of the proposal. To try to interject a little spontaneity I told her on a Sunday that she would be proposed to at some point during the next week. Every day I was going to bring her to a place that was special to us and our relationship, but I wouldn’t tell her what day she would get the ring. At first she thought I would go all 7 days and propose the next Sunday. But then she started second guessing herself. She knew that I knew she thought that, so would it be early in the week to take her off guard? Or did I plan for that as well? It became a great big mind game that we had a lot of fun with. Of course i fanned the flames of her uncertainty so when I got down on one knee at Langles Bridge in City Park it was still surprising and exciting. We had been to City Park many times in our relationship, but compared to all of the other locations the park wasn’t somewhere etched in our memories together. When we got to the proposal spot she asked what made this place so special to our relationship. I responded that it would be the most important of them all because it was the place I would ask her to marry me. I got down on one knee and she said yes!
What are your most special memories from the wedding day?
David and Luana: One of my bridesmaids may have thought we were joking when we said that her 3.5 year old daughter (our flower girl), side-eyeing us as we sat up on the altar was one of our “favorite memories,” but we were serious! It definitely had us stifling our laughter, which only made her side-eye us more!
Luana: When I met David at the end of the aisle, he leaned in and gave me a quick kiss. I think we were both just so excited that we forgot that part comes later in the ceremony, whoops!
David: Reading her card to me. It was the first time all day I got to get away from the stress, the people, and the craziness to focus on what was happening. Even though it was just about 30 seconds it felt like I was wrapped up in that card forever. Luana wasn’t there with me at that moment, but it felt like she was. And I was reminded exactly why I was doing this. I cried there by myself and couldn’t wipe the smile off my face.
